Thuy Linh NguyenIndonesia has an ambition to become the world’s fourth largest economy by 2045. In recent years, the country saw a multitude of environmental problems: floods in the cities and land degradation in the upstream, forests blazing in the wake of land clearance for palm oil putting biodiversity and human health in danger, and its capital is choked by worsening air quality and sinking slowly beneath the waves. As the country is grappling with the looming crisis emerging from the global pandemic of COVID-19, questions arise as to how it will keep its economic ambition and cope with the forthcoming climate crisis. What lessons Indonesia should take from the pandemic to build forward better and prepare for climate catastrophe? How does the political-economy of energy and natural resources management shape the state of environment and might play a determinant role in its readiness to respond to climate crisis? What challenges and opportunities from the changes in society today that could shape Indonesia’s nature and climate resilience in the future?
